So I was able to get my greedy little paws on the upcoming Namco title Splatterhouse while at the San Diego Comic-Con. For this updated retelling of the original 1988 beat-em-up, side-scroller game, Splatterhouse has undergone a serious makeover, including Rick, who has gone from looking like Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th to a cross-breed of Abomination and the Tank from Left 4 Dead…on hypersteroids.
According to the Splatterhouse Wiki, the 2010 update, while similar to the original storyline, has a few new twists. Dr. West, a character mentioned in the original game, is now the teacher of Rick and Jennifer. West becomes the antagonist and sends monsters (Known as the “Corrupted”) to kidnap Jennifer and fatally wound Rick, who finds the Mask and wears it. The plot also now involves portals that spawn the creatures appearing across the world (these elements being pulled from the second and third game). Rick will travel to various places such as corrupt carnival and a graveyard, with the West Mansion acting as a hubworld.
Curiouser and curiouser, I hiked my way back to Namco’s booth to talk to the game’s producer, Dan Tovar, to find out what exactly gamers would be in store for and of course, get in some quality game time.
In case you’re wondering …The splatter kills are AWESOME.
This game drops for Xbox/PS3 later this year! For more info, hit up their official website, Twitter, and Facebook page!
