You may not know it, but your Facebook account has dollar value written all over it. Last week according to VeriSign’s iDefense, over 1.5 MILLION accounts have been hacked by a scammer who goes by the name of “Kirllos.” They believe he’s already sold around 700,000 logins, which he sells in bulk of 1,000. So how much would 1,000 Facebook pages cost you? Around $25-$45 – depending on how many friends each one has. More friends = more $$$.
His strategy in snatching these accounts is quite simple (and preventable). Kirllos portrays a friend in need asking for help from the owners friends. The scammer then sends a link to a site that contains malware, and once the victim clicks it they practically hand over the ownership of their account.
“Once you have the name and address and other profile-type information from a social networking site, you can use it to corroborate your way into debit card accounts and bank accounts through social engineering,” said Rick Howard, iDefense director of cyber intelligence. “Even as a security guy, I have to double and triple clutch when it comes to accepting friend invites from people that I do not know.”
*DON’T click on suspicious links, files, or download anything you’re not sure about.
*ONLY accept friend request of PEOPLE YOU KNOW AND TRUST.
*If something seems fishy, then it probably is.
*Use common sense, and be cautious.
Although hacking is nothing new to internet users, Facebook is experiencing an attack like no other. So unless you want your account sold to some random person for a few cents, then don’t be careless with your clicks!
