CrixEd's Note: Kotaku After Dark (and Stupid)

By GG-CrixLee 4 months, 3 weeks ago • 22 Comments

Wow. So I’m perusing good ol’ Kotaku.com when I come across THIS.

And if the image of the girl wasn’t offensive enough, when you click the hyperlink you not only go to Fleshbot.com (which I can’t even GIVE you a screen grab of because it’s THAT bad) but the FIRST place your eye goes is to the top banner (obviously)...where you get a LOVELY shot of a girl giving 'oral pleasure’.

You should be ASHAMED of yourselves, Kotaku. Your site, much like the rest of us, has a responsibility to the public. People (ESPECIALLY KIDS AND FEMALE GAMERS) look to our sites for the latest in video games and VG culture, NOT an impromptu lesson in Oral Sex. Simply putting NSFW on a link does NOT excuse referencing a porn website. You ARE aware that males aren’t the only ones who game, right?

Seriously, did y’all walk through the Dummy Door?! The pic you chose was not only offensive to women, but also DANGEROUS territory for children to access. You DO realize that parents can hold you responsible, right?

oh and p.s. NOT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT NSFW MEANS.

Not to mention the fact that you referenced a PORN site was just poor judgment. I expect better from you and I hope y’all get busted for this.

I’m seriously disappointed, man.

There, I said it.

I don't not like or like kotaku but I was hoping you were just being a little over the top. And you were not. I'm sorry for ever thinking that. When you said flesh bot I thought oh well maybe they are just showing girl gamers naked with consoles. It may not really be porn just half naked chicks. Nope wrong again. There was so much porn I was stunned. I wrote an article about girl gamers selling themselves like this picture shows so I've never really been in support of this. But wow. I can't believe that. I run a gaming blog and I would never...wow I mean. Very nice read. Sorry for doubting you.

I'm tempted to write an article on it. I do a article called the burn were I roast things I hate in video games and the industry. I was going to activision tomorrow but I might have to bump this one up for tomorrow.

While I have my own reasons to hate Kotaku, I imagine the intention was for people to click the Fleshbot link as the source if they wanted to see more of what was in the original article.

However, it does feed the same crazy thoughts that only testosterone driven males play games and want to read about them. I mean, I could shrug and say "fine" if there was a greater balance in games and the journalism of it, but this is more eye-roll inducing for me otherwise.

Still, I'm not sure what to think about calling them out in this knee-jerk fashion. They do have their audience, after all, and the post follows the same system every other one does. It has the title of the article which links to the full, the description and the source link at the end. The only thing questionable is the content of the article itself, hence the content of the source site. That, however, becomes its own can of worms. As I said, for me it is so trite in our modern games media that I merely shake my head and sigh. Others may think it is great. Even more may misquote the intentions of freedom of speech, as always happens in these cases. Who knows?

While I don't disagree with you, I do feel this article is a little bit off the handle and lacks its own professional responsibility and attitude.

"I imagine the intention was for people to click the Fleshbot link as the source if they wanted to see more of what was in the original article."

yeah...WHAT ARTICLE? It was 2 paragraphs (if at that). My point is that this is an easily accessible website and reading an article about a video game should NOT involve me having to be subjected to an image of a girl performing fellatio.

They needed to be called out. It was stupid and irresponsible.

and I'd like to know what you mean by 'knee-jerk'. I thought about this for a good couple of hours before moving ahead with the story.

accusing me of being 'knee-jerk' is the same as calling me a 'typical woman' and when you do THAT, my knee will definitely jerk...into a not fun place for you!

lol.

Wow. I was just reviewing the rules on how to embed our own videos (not YouTube) and you can NOT post a video deemed 18+ without one of those annoying Age Gates. Can't imagine posting something like this on a mainstream site that gamers of all ages visit. Shame on you, Kotaku. Epic fail.

This is something I expect to see from gorilla mask, not a gaming site like Kotaku... They defiantly have it coming to them if they keep this up. Just sayin.

Within a few hours can still be knee jerk. I know because I've let something stir for as long as a day and went and posted about it, and then a week later read back and felt regret about it. Happens all the time to me, in fact!

Note I'm not saying I disagree with you, I do think this has been handled irresponsibly. It's just as unprofessional as Kotaku is being, this article response feels to me as if it lacks a professional attitude as well.

I don't mean offense or to attack, just providing my own personal constructive criticism. Even if this article wasn't knee-jerk, it certainly sounds that way based on its tone. This is no direct attack on you, just letting you know how it came off to me.

yeah, you keep saying that. let me remind you of something: I am the Editor-in-Chief. CrixEd's note is an OP-ED piece.

p.s. I don't appreciate backhanded compliments.

All the videos/links/articles posted by that Ottimo Massimo guy are all porn! Or at least def NSFW. Even the previews of the articles are NSFW!

I def think Kotaku needs to put an age filter on the content provided by that guy.

I understand where your frustration is coming from but Fleshbot.com and Kotaku.com are both part of the Gawker.com network so there is no issue as far as the linking goes, that's just like saying Microsoft aren't allowed to link to the Xbox Live website or Sony linking to the Playstation site.

I'm not agreeing with the article or for Gawker for allowing it to be published, there is an obvious lack of common-sense where their content editing is concerned. I'm not a fan of the Kotaku site or the Gawker network at all for that matter so I agree with Kaboom, boycott it at will and spread the word about it too because I know such things like this happens on a regular basis - but that doesn't mean they aren't well within their rights to do so.

The picture, you've got every right to be offended by I suppose, it's every person's right to interpret an image as they see fit but the title is impossible to misinterpret - as if "Pixel Passion" wasn't enough there's "Nudity" and "Sex" both are words that pretty much everyone knows about and what they lead to when mentioned, especially on a website.

As for NSFW, correct, not everyone knows what it means but given the picture and the title I would expect anyone to search and see what it meant prior to clicking on the link to open the article if there was any concern, otherwise it's of no fault but your own. If it was on the cover of a magazine you wouldn't open it up at work/school so what difference does it make on the web? (same thing applies to e-mail, you don't click on links or open files sent to you by people you don't know without first taking some precaution). Even without the NSFW you said it yourself the picture was offensive, why click on it?

As far as parents holding them responsible goes sorry but that's just nonsense, if any parent was worried about their child(ren) accessing porn or other unwanted material they'd have restrictions in place on their machines that would prevent access to such material. Simply enabling Content advisor on IE and setting Nudity and Sexual Material to Limited(!) would prevent any access to these two sites.

Ignorance is not the fault of the web developer, it's the user's responsibility to know what they're browsing and having taken adequate steps to prevent the unwanted from happening to them.
