The challenge for Episode 3 had the remaining 8 contestants broken into two teams of 4 – the red team and the blue team. The red team consisted of Doc, Luge, Ciji (Star), and Nauseous. The blue was Amped, Cyrus, Fame Girl, and Big D.
At night, the teams were taken to a football field where a large slingshot contraption stood at the ready. Returning to guest judge on the panel was God of War’s David Jaffe who became a bit embarrassed at the Wayne’s World bow down techniques of a few of the contestants.
The challenge for this week: Test the players’ ability to work in a team.
The teams would choose one quarterback to lob a football past the 25 yard line, while the other three would act as receivers and catch the ball. Of course it wasn’t going to be that simple. The receivers had to use a “tester net” to not only catch the ball, but keep it in the net as they made their way to the end zone to dump the ball into a bucket for the touchdown. To add to the difficulty, there was only one tester net for the three and all three receivers had to keep one hand on the net at all times, otherwise the ball would not count. The fastest team to get three balls into the bucket would be declared winners of the challenge and be safe from elimination.
The quarterbacks chosen in each of the teams were Doc and Amped.
The nets were an interesting choice. They weren’t your typical net with a dip in the middle. More like a big fabric Frisbee. Because of its flatter surface, it really did require the team to watch and talk to each other to keep the ball balanced on top of the “tester net,” otherwise it would just simply roll off.
Ciji cracks me up! When deciding on whom the QB for the red team would be, the camera cuts to Ciji commenting about the slingshot giving a laugh as she says, “I don’t know if I can pull that damn thing back. It’s like a giant rubber band! I don’t know….look at these arms!” She begins to prod one held up arm to emphasize her point. And Sony decided to emphasize it even more by adding squishy sound effects.
And Doc must like being a pretentious douchebag! Talking about how he’s “worried about people like Star (Ciji) that’s not going to be able to bring it up in a challenge like this.” Yeah, well, let’s see exactly how you did buddy!
So Doc thinks he’s hot shit obviously, but his weak and pathetic launching of the ball is what actually caused the red team to miss quite a few balls in the beginning. And of course he was trying to make excuses that the handle was cold and whatnot. Rrrriggghhhttt. Amped went before you and did 10x better than you…explain that one to me.
Luge is a contestant that I am starting to appreciate. She’s very smart and quick on her feet. On the first caught ball, she doesn’t just ease the ball into the bucket by holding one of the sides and tipping it over. Nope, she straight backs up towards and halfway over the bucket, crouches a bit and helps not only guide the ball between her legs, but also prevents it from accidentally catching the sides of the bucket and fumbling out. Now that’s a strategy!
Once both teams complete the challenge, the times are in and the red team comes out victorious.
Now the answer to the question – who was the first girl to break down into tears in front of the judges…..
Fame Girl. Fame Girl starts crying when the judges ask for her explanation on why she is one of the two weakest links on the blue team (Big D being the other due to the fact that as he was running backwards, he fell). As I’m watching, I’m rolling my eyes slightly until I catch the expression on David Jaffe’s face.
David Jaffe is sitting there with chin in hand leaning towards his left slightly with this unsympathetic and bored-off-his- ass look that was just priceless. The little things that can bring a smile to my face.
And throughout the episode, Fame Girl’s nature turns from sweet to near vicious. Her voice starts to get higher and louder and the bitterness really starts to show.
Near the end, before the decision, the judges ask Amped and Cyrus who they would prefer, out of the two, to continue to have on their team. Both picked Big D and I have to say that is what I myself would have chosen based on the Fame Girl’s past performances. When Cyrus voiced his choice, Fame Girl’s commentary is just ridiculous! Tell me, how is being honest and making a choice somehow this big “betrayal”? Meredith Molinari says it best at the end, “You are all still rivals”.
This episode was an improvement from the last two, I have to admit. I am still not a fan, but I am surprised to hear myself say that I am looking forward to the 4th episode. The reason? The next challenge will require the contestants to participate in a LARP. I have to see this to believe it.
