Applications are now available and being accepted for the 2010 G.I.R.L Scholarship. Sponsored by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and overseen by Scholarship America, this scholarship program is aimed to helping educate and recruit more women into the field of video game production and design.
“The past two G.I.R.L. Scholarship recipients were such a valued addition to our team that we are thrilled to offer this program for the third consecutive year,” said Laura Naviaux, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. “Our goal is to continue to encourage and reward women who share our commitment and passion for developing cutting edge online games for all demographic groups.”
Unfortunately, there can only be one, but for this lucky winner, they will receive up to $10,000 to be applied towards tuition and other educational expenses at the school at which the student is currently enrolled. To sweeten the deal, the lucky student will also have an optional internship at one of Sony Online Entertainment’s studios (room, board, and living expenses not included) for up to 10 weeks!
In order to apply, entrants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program related to video games (this includes video game art, design, animation, production, programming or visual effects) and must not graduate before the end of the 2011 spring term. Applicants must also review and agree to the program’s official rules, as well as submit an online application with an existing piece of art.
If chosen as a semifinalist, entrants must then be prepared to submit two pieces of concept art and one essay to be reviewed by a panel of SOE judges. Online applications must be completed and submitted on or before February 15, 2010. SOE will announce the winner on or around May 20th, 2010.
