Spring 2008, I was turned on to a little documentary (that should be required viewing for ANY gamer worth their coin-op salt) called “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” which is about the race and rather questionable (cough Mitchell totally cheated cough) outcome to be Donkey Kong World Record holder.
As a girl who spent nearly her entire life in the Pacific Northwest, I spent the film pulling for Washington State resident Steve Wiebe and was just as devastated and angry like pretty much everyone else who knows the difference between right and cheater. I thought, “Man, what a good guy. I’d love to be able to shake his hand someday.”
Later that year I got my chance.
I met Wiebe at a party held during the final “E for All” convention in Los Angeles. When meeting someone you admire, you run the risk they’ll turn out to be a total jerk -this was not the case. NICEST GUY EVER. Graciously posing for every pic, talking to all that approached and of course, played video games – both console and coin-op – with fellow party guests. TOTAL gentleman and still truly surprised by the fact that he has “fans”.
Which is why I find his birthday (today) newsworthy.
