The air seems electric these days, especially with Infinity Ward’s newest installment Modern Warfare 2 on the brink of release. However this excitement has its share of conflict and even of patriotic discomfort.
If you aren’t aware of this, that’s probably because you aren’t sniffing around the Internet hard enough. Let me break it down for you. We are all aware that Infinity Ward has made its claim to fame with its engaging stories of war. The masses avidly followed these games and maybe some took them the wrong way.
FPS’ as of late seem to be glorifying war. Take some good guys, give them guns and orders to eliminate those who oppose them. However what we never see in these games are the instances where we have our own men taking action against innocents in order to further their advancement. Who would want to play out such a scenario in the games that they enjoy so much? Not too many of us, myself included. Infinity Ward is finally making us do something we are all subconsciously avoiding. The ugly face of war and the price it often has attached.
There was a leak of the gameplay of this mission up on You Tube.com. No sooner had I viewed it, it was ripped off faster than a prom dress in May due to “copyright” issues, which is more than likely the reason. I’m also more than positive that Infinity Ward wanted this to be a bit of a shock value. So to maintain the purity of the game, I am not going to spoil the mission at all but I WILL say that viewing this mission personally made me uncomfortable.
As an FPS lover, I often have no hesitation pulling the trigger. This action signifies the end of rampaging zombies from nom noming on my brain. That said, I never have an issue battling the forces of evil even if, oh say…in CoD4 multiplayer, I was part of the opposing team. This however is completely different. In this mission you are not fighting a predetermined enemy, which makes each pixelated bullet a marker of civilian casualties.
Needless to say when this game drops on November 10, 2009 I will be sitting comfortably in my living room, controller in hand with bated breath until the deed is done.
What do you think about the slaughter of innocent pixels? How will you do with this mission?
