Back to the E3 2009 Coverage Center
I won’t even begin to tell you the fresh hell that was the line for the Konami Press Conference during E3. There was such anger and frustration about the line and the limited space, that you figured once the show started that nobody was going to be happy. Oh, but they were. Once the room finally cleared out and things were settled, the man of the hour came out; Hideo Kojima. We’d been waiting to hear more on the titles that Kojima Productions had been teasing us with and Hideo didn’t let us down.
Metal Gear Arcade
You know, Kojima has been toying with the idea of an Arcade game for years. Even when he hinted at making a 3D style version of the VR Training Missions YEARS ago.. people were unsure how that’d play out. Then, he gave us a bit of a taste with Metal Gear Online and right when we got comfortable with that – he decided to rock us with Metal Gear Arcade. With a full stereoscopic 3D virtual setup and apparently all the best parts of Metal Gear Online, I have a feeling people will be rushing to the Arcades to get the full feel. While he mentioned it being available as a download on consoles, he didn’t mention if the headset would be readily sold as well. Can’t imagine it would though, most VR headsets cost as much as a Madonna adoption, so maybe we’ll have to see what happens there.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

So, yeah.. apparently they just decided they didn’t have enough to throw together another Snake game on a console, because of the work on Rising. It looks really good, especially for a PSP title.. but I’m wondering if they’ll also release it on PSN as a title kind of like Siren’s episodic downloadable games. Since the title takes place ten years after Metal Gear Solid 3, it’s still fresh in the fans minds and will fill in the chunks between Metal Gear Solid 3 and Portable Ops. What else though? I mean, we’re always excited for a new game.. but what will this one give us that the other PSP titles didn’t? Backstory? I’m definitely curious.
Metal Gear Solid: Rising
Now, I’m confused with this mainly from a fan perspective. Everyone bitched and whined about how stupid the character of Raiden was back in Metal Gear Solid 2 and then suddenly everyone forgot they hated him when Raiden came back in Metal Gear Solid 4 and took his balls back. I never saw the problem, really.. because in Metal Gear Solid 2 he was the protege type, you know? Now he’s got his own game coming out and everyone is all excited and I just want to remind them that this is the same guy they were gay-bashing back in 2001 – but I digress.
So, Kojima let everyone know that they’re not using the same engine that they were using in MGS4 and that they’re making a whole new one. One of their claims to fame is that they rebuild their engines before they actually make the game, as they want to keep everything fresh and innovative. They haven’t given us a name on the engine or even a glimpse of what they’ve done so far, save for a rendered shot of the new Raiden that barely gave us any idea what they’re doing with it.
Sigh.
I find myself rather frustrated that I sat through all of the constant Kojima Production countdowns, deciphered all their wacky codes and even fact-checked on statements said in previous games.. JUST so I could get a teaser trailer of ONE shot of Raiden. Come on, guys. We were already wet with anticipation, you didn’t need to tease.
Saw: The Video Game
Okay, so maybe I joked around a lot with Katie at the Konami booth about this game. More or less because these movies are starting to come out with the frequency of those “Land Before Time” flicks now and I’m tired of hearing about them. Thing is, the actual game looks promising.. and I didn’t expect that.

During the Konami Press Conference, Tobin Bell came out and in the creepiest voice imaginable, rocked us with some science on the game. Basically, you’re put in the situation of a Jigsaw victim and have to find your way out of puzzles and the like, finding your way out of a situation ripped from the movies. With an amalgamation of different problems from the films plus some new enemies that aid Jigsaw in his peculiar end-game, one can’t help but wonder if this game will spawn a new type of genre. It seems action is very devoid in the title from the trailer and the walkthroughs I watched on the floor and that it’s mostly about being hands-on and actually working your way through the various traps set out for you by Jigsaw and Co. Is that enough though? Will that keep players hearts pounding and their palms sweating?
Guess we’ll see. If not, we’ll still have to sit through another fifteen of those Saw movies, but at least we know Donnie Wahlberg won’t be in another though. Phew.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
I have to admit, I was sitting in a row of friends and such during the Konami Press Conference and so I was a bit more casual than usual. We sat elbow-to-elbow and whispered and squealed together.. but not a single one of us saw this coming. With the lights low and Patrick Stewart’s voice coming on quietly to narrarate the trailer we were watching, we sat gripped to our seats. Then, the all-too-familiar logo flashed and like a bunch of frat-boys at a kegger.. we screamed.

Again, big old tease. We know f—k all about this game but as long as Kojima Productions ensures that it doesn’t turn out to be the trainwreck that Harmony of Dissonance was.. I think we’ll be okay. Yeah, you heard right. Hideo Kojima is involved with Castlevania this time around, so expect either a brand new take on a classic title or maybe Richter comes back and explains the Cold War to us via Codec with Alucard. We never know.
Either way? Awesome.
Dance Dance Revolution & Karaoke Revolution
I bet you’re asking why I put these two together. Well, they’re not really cranking out anything revolutionary, as their titles would suggest. I mean, we’ve been singing into these microphones connected to our consoles for years now and oh.. yeah, dancing on mats to arrows on a screen for how long? I think we get it.
However, at least DDR for the Wii brings a little more to the table and lets you use the Wii Balance Board to sway, wiggle and punch to victory. Thank God, because if I slid my mat on the carpet and flew into the table ONE more time while playing DDR.. someone was going to get sued for damages.
Katie took some time out on the floor and checked out Dance Dance Revolution for Wii and absolutely loved it. She said it seemed to work her out more than the constant lifting of the foot to mat thing. Swiveling her hips and jutting said hips forward did look silly, but she said it was a lot more fun than previous ventures into the game, so maybe we can try that out. Does it mean it’s a “revolution”? No. For eff’s sake, just stop with the Revolution. We get it. <3
What isn’t listed here? Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and a few other smaller titles that weren’t big shout-outs during the conference. However, I intend on giving you guys a bit more of hands-on account of Silent Hill’s new Wii title and even cover some of the backstory till now.
Keep tuned into GirlGamer for more on these upcoming titles!

I loved the first Metal Gear Solid, but since then have never been able to get sucked into the series again. I liked MGS2, but never felt bothered to complete it, and by time MGS3 rolled around I was completely on board with GameCube and Xbox. So when it comes to Kojima announcing ten thousand more MGS titles, all I can do is shrug and say "meh. I thought he wanted to STOP doing MGS games for a change?" The new Castlevania must be a God-send, giving the guy something new to work on after years of "Snake? SNAAAAKE!". Of course, I feel I need to hand in my Gamer Card since I still have yet to play a Castlevania game. D'oh!
Overall, good coverage. Though interestingly enough, every shot I saw of the Konami Press Conference seemed rather...boring, actually. Maybe that's just me?
Well, I would have been the big frat-boyish screamer during the Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams bit. hee
Well, the only way you can play DDR right now is with the backwards compatibility of your PS3 and some PS2 and PS1 titles. They seem to definitely be putting all their eggs in the Wii basket right now. As far as the Metal Gear Solid thing goes -- I'm one of those diehards that you read about. I love everything Kojima throws out onto the table and even though he's said a million times - "I'm done!", we know he hasn't been done. Now, what I wanted to hear about was a remake of "Snatcher" because I think it's about time.. but nothing. I wonder if that would be an out-of-house production anyways, you know?
I also personally believe that Kojima is a storyteller and maybe he feels there's more story to tell in the MGSVerse, you know? I know that if I had spent over twenty years on my characters and their history.. I'd want to make sure every detail was given. So, you'll find me playing all of these!
On Silent Hill, I was hesitant to squeal because there are so many ways a Wii title with Silent Hill can go wrong. It wasn't until I played around with it that I really - REALLY felt strongly. More on that with the article though!

2 years, 7 months agoI still can't stand Raiden. All he did was whine about everything in MGS4 and he nearly died because of his stupidity. I'm marching around in Metal Gear REX and he's all "I'mma jump out and cover you!" Hello?! I'm in Metal Gear REX! You'll be lucky if I don't step ON you! So, needless to say, I'm not keen on MGS: Rising. Arcade and Peace Walker look sweet though! I love MGS 3, it's probably my favorite out of the series and to see a game that fills in the gaps like that looks promising. Arcade looks sweet too but I wonder if it's gonna be a rail shooter or will they include the stealth elements as well?
Castlevania sounds very promising, especially with the potential for powerhouse voices like Stewart. I guess they're opting for that instead of the narm-tacular quality they got for SOTN and Curse of Darkness.
As for DDR, nothing on them moving up to the PS3 console, eh?
