Girl Gamer

Burlesque Gamers

Just when I thought the existence of Booth Babes was as bad as it could get for females who want to be appreciated for more than just their looks, I find this: Video Game Girls Burlesque. Every gamer’s fantasy you say? I say every girl gamer’s nightmare.

Don’t get me wrong, I love cos-play as much as any other geek out there, but when fantasy turns to reality in a degrading manner for female gamers just to satisfy some male fetish, I have a problem. How can the dancers arrive “armed and outfitted for an arcade battle”, when all their gear comes right off? I guess Princess Zelda has powers I’ve never heard of, and I don’t even want to ask where Princess Peach will be pulling out those mushrooms from. I have to wonder, as decade-old characters that we all grew up with, is this what we have reduced them to, and is this how we now portray them? I doubt our delicate Princess Peach would ever participate in a burlesque show, and don’t think Link or Mario would ever see the princesses as “fairest” anymore.

As far as the entertainment factor goes, I’m for equality. What happened to including a shirtless Rayu or Tidus? If you add men to the mix I’ll be at the front of the stage drooling. But until then, events like these not only demean and objectify women, they also disgrace and simplify the characters we love and respect.

Whoa, I never heard of this. I guess this is what it's come to, though it's not a surprise since we do have magazines that show some of our favorite heroines nude. I mean, yeah, they're pixels...but somehow we see them as more than that. I think it's wrong simply because we've grown-up with these characters and they've made such an impact on females IN video-games. We've come to respect them in a different way, so it's disheartening to see this rubbish. I'm definitely all for equality as well, though. ;-P

Video games are great because they help us reignite a kind of imagination that may have been lost since childhood. Unfortunately, in many cases this becomes sexual ideation - especially for male gamers. Things like this Burlesque show only encourage that kind of ideation, which isn't necessary bad... but it isn't necessarily good either.

I agree with you, Alyx. Add men to the mix, and it's okay (well, I'd like to drool, anyway) because it isn't another reminder of the inequalities.

I only agree to this if Lara Croft could shoot anyone who gets on the stage...hey, they wanted the characters in the flesh, right? That's what you get. All of it. otherwise, it's not worth it to me. Weak sauce.

That's just the thing. These are figures we've grown to know and love over the years. And dressing up as them at burlesque-like events is really out of "character" and puts a damper on them and everything they represent.

Yeah... I always thought Princess Peach was so modest, only showing her goodies to mushrooms and the toadstools who helped her change into pink dress #32 :\ Apparently she's a whore >.<

Equal opportunity here, we need to get a Chippendale version with "hot video game guys." Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Raiden or Snake, just to name a few.

Hell get me the cast of 300 and a spray can of PAM so I can spray them down for a minute or two.

Uh, yeah, I'd show up for the 300 guys. Da-yum.
