No BlizzCon For the First Time since 2006

As you have probably heard and undoubtedly cried and/or cursed and/or punched some random dude in the face over, BlizzCon 2012 has been cancelled.

Those who were hoping to compete this year will still have their chance, with the introduction of a new World Championship.

“Blizzard Entertainment is proud to announce the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, a major global eSports event featuring some of the best pro-gaming competition in the world,” we learned via email. “Slated to take place in Asia toward the end of 2012, the Battle.net World Championship will host this year’s StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments. Blizzard gamers and eSports fans from around the world will be invited to attend and witness some of the most skilled pro players on the planet battle it out for cash and glory.”

So why no BlizzCon? This is the first time they’ve skipped a year since 2006. The answer may be just a matter of prioritization for the fans. Blizzard certainly has their hands full working on Diablo 3, the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft, and Heart of the Swarm (StarCraft II). The company hopes to get these highly-anticipated expansions and game to the fans in a timely manner.

Considering the long delays we’re used to with Blizzard titles, fans should probably be grateful for the extra crunch time. You cosplayers get some extra time to perfect your personas but don’t slack off too much, because BlizzCon is back in full force for 2013 and will undoubtedly sell out just as fast, if not faster.
