The plot of Last Rebellion revolves around the people of Junovald and the governing will of their two Gods, Meiktilia and Formival. Meiktilia was the goddess of Death, Formival the God of Life. Where Meiktilia took the souls of the departed, Formival granted souls to those just entering the world. Balance of the two was essential and the people of Junovald looked to these two gods to maintain that balance.

But one god had had enough. Formival became reckless and through his actions, many souls were revived and corrupted – turning them into powerful monsters that wreaked havoc and chaos upon the land.
Hearing the cries of help, Meiktilia granted two groups the ability to defeat Formival’s creations: Blades and Sealers. Blades were able to defeat and take the life of the monsters, while Sealers were granted the ability to seal the wandering souls that had been corrupted – preventing them from rising again. The two groups must work together in order to free the land from the dark abyss it was threatening to become.

Life vs. Death

I absolutely love the storyline of Last Rebellion. It was one of my favorite features of the game and I found it particularly clever in the little twist dealing with which of the gods was the protagonist and antagonist. A majority of stories that deal with such an outline usually have the God of Death portrayed as the big baddie. In this case, the God of Life was the opposing force.

My next favorite aspect of the game was the artwork. Simply put, it was beautiful! The character profiles, the gameplay environment, the details of weaponry and monsters – just beautiful. And the intro that shows before you even start the game was exhilarating.

I’m a fan of turn-based combat, so the fighting system was one I was delighted with. Though there were many actions that could be done, I found that the system was not overcomplicated and easy to follow and understand. I was disappointed, however, at the leveling system they had chosen to run with. I had hoped for more of a Final Fantasy based leveling system, but this was a minor setback, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game did not piece together so well.

My main peeve was the character dialog and voicing. Dialog was choppy, sloppy, and clichéd. The voices for the characters grated on my nerves and did not complement the characters background very well.
For instance, take one of the main characters, Aisha. I was so annoyed with this character that I often chose to lead out in the game with Nine just because she bothered me that much. Based on Aisha’s background and experience, I was expecting someone calm, slow to anger yet witty with sly taunts and insults, as well as more of a “wise” feel to her. Instead, there was a high pitched valley type girl with a snotty attitude. The combination of both of these facts really killed the immersion into the story and gameplay for me. I found myself so very very very VERY grateful that you could skip the voicing and just read the scrolling dialog (even though the dialog itself just plain sucked) and move on.

Following on that, I sorely wish that the developers had decided not to follow along the lines of Persona and instead had actual cinema clip encounters and simulated interaction. Sure the artwork was beautiful but just seeing the character cut outs lit whenever one of them was speaking got old and boring real fast, especially because the voicing and dialog was just so bad.

Also, the flow of the story and gameplay was slow. I had to fight to keep myself moving through the game and I believe that, once again, voicing, dialog, and the chosen way to portray interactions were a big hit on this.

Review Conclusion:

Overall, this game was…”okay”. Not horrible, but nothing really worth raving about, minus the artwork. Once again, this is an example of a game that had a great plot, good combat system, but failed to deliver due to factors that needed a bit more attention.
