Girl Gamer

Released by Electronic Arts in March, 2010; Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the latest addition to the popular Battlefield series. This first-person shooter gathers a team of up to 16 players on contested land in do or die face off. Players can then group into squads to overcome task such as diffusing bombs and capturing flags.

Single Player

Let me start by saying, the single player is not impressive. The similarities to Call of Duty are apparent; everything from the controls, weapons and movement of the game. The plot is basically run, get ambushed, run, get ambushed, and so on. Not only are the ambushes predictable, but so is 80% of the game. Sure there were a few times I was surprised, but overall the game was obvious. You’d always stumble across a gigantic gun before encountering a tank, or a sniper rifle right before you end up having to pick people off 500 yards away. The weapons also lack originality. I never came across a new weapon and was like, “Wow! This is cool!” But hey, they did the job, at least.

On the bright side…

The graphics were beautifully done!

Each terrain is highly detailed and a definite bonus. However, bonuses aren’t always free as my GTX260 was chugging along on low settings. From my experience with this game, I would suggest using an above-average video card to achieve medium to high in-game settings.

All in all, stunning job on the visuals, EA!

Despite my overworked video card, the interactive environment blew me away! When you shoot buildings with a rocket, the walls cave in. Giving any buildilng a generious amount of firepower would bring it crashing down, and stomping down a whole forest with a single tank is definitely a plus!Personally, I’d have to say my favorite part is the dialogue between the characters. While I was bored to death with the constant run, get ambushed plot I kept entertained with the AI dialog. Occasionally you’d hear, “So did you see that one part in Predator where that guy goes in the tree..” If you can pull yourself through the yawn inspiring gameplay you’ll have some laughs along the way.

The Rules of the Game

To succeed on your mission, you must choose one of 4 available classes: Assault, Engineer, Medic, or Recon. Players can then decide to enter a squad, a mini-team consisting of 3 other players, for organized teamwork and additional respawn locations. During combat you can unlock new weapons and pins, which grant you extra experience points at the end. To come out victorious though you have to enforce the terrifying“T”word, also known as teamwork.

During the multiplayer it’s critical to engage in teamwork; this is a war game, not a prance around on your pony throwing water balloons game; so support your team!

In the End…

The game, through it’s multiplayer mode, had me hooked to the point where I spent 9 hours playing in one day. The experience was immersive, amazing and astonishing. Even with the singleplayer taking a huge flop, the multiplayer pulls through, and delivers true heart pounding war-like situations. As far as multiplayer war games go, it doesn’t get any better than this.
