The story follows Harry Mason, who wakes up after a car accident to find that his daughter Cheryl is missing. Harry will wander the snowy streets of Silent Hill searching for answers of her disappearance, but when the world freezes over, he will need to escape the lumbering demons that haunt his steps. Harry will need to navigate both worlds to discover the truth; not just about his missing daughter, but also the type of person he actually is.

The idea that Silent Hill messes with your mind is the foundation on which Shattered Memories was created. Returning to its roots, most notably “Jacob’s Ladder,” (which inspired the series to begin with), Climax Studios set out to recreate that self-doubt in the player and remove us from our shotgun-wielding comfort zones. This aspect is both novel and damning for the overall gaming experience. Being a huge step down in graphical quality from Silent Hill: Homecoming proves both disappointing and nostalgic, as it is actually somewhat reminiscent of the original at times. (Homecoming was developed by Double Helix) Although replay is fun to see how the game “plays you back,” there are only three possible endings to collect and obviously no weapons to unlock, so that interest will be short-lived.
Overall, I would call Shattered Memories more of a fan fiction that is to be played and accepted as is. For those, like myself that have played the original at least a dozen times, you will notice subtle nods to the original and most certainly appreciate it. However, I would NOT recommend playing this game alongside any of the others. Honestly, the soundtrack is the only real tie-in that makes the game feel like a Silent Hill experience – and knowing that it is the last by Akira Yamaoka makes it all the sadder.
Play with caution and an open-mind; it doesn’t suck, by any means, but “Shattering Memories” is exactly what it will do.
“Re-imagining” is right – Shattered Memories takes a handful of names & locales from the original Silent Hill game and tosses them rather precariously into a barely-there storyline. Scholars of Silent Hill lore are most likely to be disappointed; but the game, itself is brilliant in its own way. Not all is lost! Although no replacement for the original by any means, observant players will realize that this tribute hasn’t completely forgotten its inspiration…
