Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf is the debut for the series on the iPhone, and EA Sports could’ve easily just ported over an earlier version of the game and called it good. Instead, it went in from the ground up and tailor-made an exquisite golf experience for pros and amateurs alike, thanks to a fundamental touch-screen gameplay system, a mostly solid presentation, and abundant extras that will have you scoring birdies for hours on end.

What’s great about the control scheme is how it doesn’t just follow the same circular arc as other golf games. You actually have a draw-out meter that requires you to draw a straight line. Simply pull your thumb or finger down on the pad to set up your backswing, hold it there if you need power, and then push it upward to execute the swing. There’s other things to do as well, including targeting, club selection, draw, fade and spin. Putting also plays a huge part in the game, as you can use a one-time shot view to see which way your ball is going to go, and then adjust your putt from there. The controls are really great, no matter what your golf skill may be.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour also gives you a lot to do. There are seven courses available here, and 120 holes to try your luck with. Furthermore, several PGA Tour pros are on hand (including Woods – duh), or you can build your own from scratch. A PGA Tour mode challenges you to test the finest of your golf skills through a series of courses and challenges. The better you do, the more cash you’ll earn. It’s really great how this part of the game comes together, as you’ll be glued to it for hours on end. It’s a perfect game to take on a car trip.
The presentation is really nice, too. The graphics are beautifully rendered, with well-designed 3-D golf courses and nice animations. The camera view is always clear and precise as well, so you can’t blame a stupid obstacle for ruining your shot. We just wish the announcers weren’t so sleepy though. The only time they really pipe up is if you make a wonderful shot – or a crappy one.
Regardless, if you’re a golf pro looking to satisfy your fix on the go, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf is your ace in the hole. There’s a lot to see and play here, and you’ll take hours mastering your skills and becoming just as good as Tiger. Just don’t confuse it for the real thing, though. More than likely he could still kick your butt on the putting green.
