How tasty is it?

Can a game be considered too cute? In some cases, yes. For instance, Barbie Horse Adventures for the Xbox is too saccharine loaded for its own good. You’ll feel so much pity for the horse being stuck there that you’d wish you could shoot it. Same goes for Barney’s Hide and Seek on the Sega Genesis, but we’ll save you the nausea. Super Yum Yum 3 raises the bar on cuteness, with super-colorful chameleon character wandering around a number of levels, eating fruit. It almost sounds like a crazy twist on the Yoshi’s Story theme, although the folks at Airplay UK surprised us by also including addictive gameplay.

Here’s the gist of your journey. You’re Leon the Chameleon, and all of your babies have been snatched up by the make-up covered Ms. Tum Tum. It’s up to you to journey through each level, recovering the kids and showing this Tum Tum character a thing or two. How do you do that? Simple – by eating as much fruit as humanly possible.

There’s a catch however. You can’t just go through and eat whatever you please. You have to eat the fruit that matches up with your skin color. So if you’re blue, you first have to chow down on blueberries before eating anything else. With each fruit you eat, you change to a different color, depending on what color of leaf is topping the fruit. So if it’s covered by yellow, you have to find a yellow fruit. There’s really a technique to all of it, but it’s easy to learn and fun to play. The mini-game, involving timing with a red bar on the corner of the screen, is fun to play too. And we love how you need to weigh in to see how much food you’ve eaten in a stage. Time to go on a diet, tubby!

You control Leon by touching your iPhone screen. You can move him around the level pretty easily, and eat fruit by drawing a straight line between it and Leon. As you progress, stages become increasingly difficult, but you’ll enlist the help of your recovered babies. They’ll assist you in eating larger fruit that gets in the way, some of which Ms. Tum Tum throws at you. (Forget rocks – nothing beats an oversized papaya!)

The graphics are overly cute (we’re talking characters that are smiling even when they’re in the most dire situation), the levels are colorful, and the sound is overly annoying at times, especially when Leon gets up the nerve to speak. (“Yum yum!”) Overall, though, it really comes together quite well.

No, Super Yum Yum 3 won’t appeal to you if you’re the kind of person who’s into, say, Terminator Salvation or Zombie Apocalypse. However, if you’re looking for a peculiar puzzle game with some depth – and lots of fruit – this is worth indulging in.
