Recently, Activision’s CEO, Bobby Kotick, had the idea of turning the Starcraft II cut scenes into a movie. Now get this, he expects gamers to be willing to pay the $20-30 to actually see it, too.
As crazy (or as cool), as it sounds, Kotick’s idea is to throw all the Starcraft II cut scenes into a giant blob, (which he calls a movie) and throw it up for sale.
Kotick stated during a the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment conference that, “If we were to take that hour, or hour and a half, and take it out of the game and we were to go to our audiences, who we have their credit card information a direct relationship, and say to them 'Would you like to have the StarCraft movie?'”
“My guess is unlike film studios that are really stuck with a model that goes through theatrical distribution and takes a signification amount of the profit away, if we were to go to an audience and say 'We have this great hour and a half of linear video that we’d like to make available to you at a $20 or $30 price point,’ you’d have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever.”
Alright Mr. Kotick, let’s take a look at this, shall we?
Assuming the people wanting to buy this “movie” have already played the game, what’s the point of seeing all the cut scenes twice when they can just relaunch the game, play it over and not have to pay a penny for it? With the game already having a price tag of $60, why would anyone in their right mind want to pay half of the actual game itself for Activision to mash all the scenes together in what they’d like to call a movie.
Personally, If I’ve already spent the money on the game and went out to buy the cut scene movie that I’d probably only end up watching maybe once or twice, I’d say that is a total waste of money. Don’t get me wrong, the cut scenes in SC2 are out of this world but if there’s Starcraft II players out there who are honestly that frantic about the game, why not just play the game over and enjoy the whole experience again?
You also have to consider that for people who are new to Starcraft II, it probably won’t make ANY sense. Think about it: you jump from one cut scene to another without any of the gameplay that’s suppose to be there in between. wtf?
You’re kidding, right? It’s not even a film! I guarantee some bored geek one day will throw them all together and post it on Youtube, and guess what? It will be free.
I say don’t butcher a great game to try and squeeze out some money from it. It’s already made you millions. Lay off my wallet, will ya?
Coming soon...
thats super duper lame.
i kinda think this is lamesauce too. And as a gal who only longs for SCII, i wouldn't pay. :| buuut maybe that's just me. Id rather a really great art book or even novel for 20 or 30 dollars.
