Frustrated, Inc: Xbox To Raise Prices

GRRRRRROWF

If you’re an Xbox Gold Subscriber, I’m sure you’ve seen this email:

Dear ________:

Thank you for being a valued member of Xbox LIVE Gold. We hope you are enjoying the many exciting and exclusive features that are included in your membership. We wanted to let you know about an upcoming price increase for your Xbox LIVE Gold subscription and how you can lock in your current price to continue enjoying everything you’ve come to love about Xbox LIVE, plus all the upcoming additions, including ESPN and Hulu Plus.

Over the past seven years, Xbox LIVE has evolved from an online gaming platform to an all-in-one gaming and entertainment service. As an Xbox LIVE Gold member, you can not only play blockbuster games, such as Halo: Reach with your friends online, you can also stream movies from Netflix* and music from Last.fm right to your TV. You can even connect with friends near and far on Facebook® and Twitter™. Plus, you also enjoy exclusive discounts and early access to game demos.
And we aren’t even close to being done. This holiday, Xbox LIVE is adding new Gold features, including ESPN and Video Kinect, with Hulu Plus coming on Xbox LIVE in 2011.

  • With ESPN on Xbox LIVE, you can stream and watch over 3,500 live and on-demand sporting events plus highlights.
  • Video Kinect allows you to chat with family and friends on the big screen, right from the comfort of your living room—no headset or controller required.
  • With Hulu Plus on Xbox LIVE you will be able to enjoy a customized Hulu Plus experience that will include Kinect navigation and Xbox LIVE Parties

Besides launching the new features and titles, we will also be increasing the price of Gold membership on November 1, 2010.

The new prices are as follows:

1-Month Gold Subscription $7.99 $9.99 (up 2 bucks)

3-Month Gold Subscription $19.99 $24.99 (up 5 bucks)

12-Month Gold Subscription $49.99 $59.99 (up 10 bucks)

If the renewal date on your current subscription is on or after November 1, 2010, your subscription will automatically renew at the new price, charged to the credit card we currently have on file for your account.

Now CLEARLY I love my Xbox (as I was in the gamer spotlight last year) and have NO issues paying an extra 10 bucks a year, considering that Xbox is the most user friendly of all the consoles when it comes to just about EVERYTHING and am actually surprised it took them THIS LONG to up the rates because let’s be honest, kids: Xbox is giving us a LOT of stuff. C’mon, you SERIOUSLY didn’t think you were gonna get ESPN, Hulu AND Hulu Plus for free, did you? I think a 2-10 dollar rate is MORE than fair, buuuuuuuut…

HERE’S THE COMPLAINT:

The email goes on to say “because you are a loyal member, we want to give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount. Click here (which takes you to the image below from xbox.com) or log on to Xbox LIVE from your console to review and take advantage of these limited-time offers. (offer expires on Oct 31)”

This means if you are a current subscriber and wish to renew or upgrade NOW, you can get a year subscription for the ONE TIME ONLY price of 39.99, which starts when your latest subscription ends. Pretty good, right?

What if you don’t want that other stuff? Why is this a forced option? Some gamers don’t want Hulu and could care LESS about ESPN, so why should they have to pay? Why not have Xbox Silver, Xbox Gold and Xbox Platinum?

Mine runs out in the end of september and I confirmed to have it at the 39.99 price when I 'automatically' renew then. It worked for me. It SUCKSSSS they are uping the price when they make tons of money already though.

I love the fact that ESPN is coming to Xbox, but I won't even be using the other two features so I think this is all BS. We should get the option if we want to upgrade and get these features. I'm almost considering getting a PS3 now :P

Fembot: the year at 39.99 would kick in once your current subscription is up.

I really feel like people should've been given the option to upgrade, not forced.

Maybe they should have, say, a Gold and then Platinum subscripstion for those who don't want all the extra stuff?

Bad idea on MS's part. Really what's XBL give you for the $60 other than say Hulu+? PSN is free and don't need any special sub for Netflix streaming, PSN+ for $50 offers a 15mo sub which includes roughly $250 in free games and discounts, free subscription to Qore ($25) along with Hulu+ and automatic download which will power up your PS3, dl any game updates and return back to sleep mode. Not a bad deal overall in comparison. On top of that, MS has a habit of requiring Gold sub for stuff that PSN gives free such as certain free DLC.

i couldn't give 2 craps less about ESPN or hulu. i don't think i should have to pay $10 extra for services i don't want. whatever.

besides, i think it's ridiculous that i just renewed in june but now they want another $40 out of me by the end of october so i can "save" money. does this mean now my renewal date is in september/october instead of june? yep. think i'm forking over an extra $40? nope. i'm not losing 9 months of my membership because the price of $39.99 looks better than $59.99.

Tisk tisk. I'm skeptical about Xbox now. PS3 offers online play free, read's blu-ray disk, and has less hardware issues than the 360. I'm so torn :(

oi.
I'll just be spending lots more money on gaming. yea they're giving us lots of stuff...but we still gotta buy the expensive games...kinect...live...and other random marketplace necessities.

What happens when a corporate entity runs an industry, especially one with a creative medium involved and not the people who love it. Film, literature, fashion, art..................meet video games. If the trend continues we can enjoy a ever increasing lack of substance and higher prices until the bottom falls out and it's no longer profitable. The good news is it will be the Punk rock version of gaming. At least at this point they're still investing millions of the billions they're raking in back into the projects.
