Mass Effect, Lost Planet and More Coming to the Big Screen

Legendary Pictures (Dark Knight, The Watchmen) has optioned and recently secured the rights to Bioware and EA’s hit game, Mass Effect. This comes mere weeks after the successful opening of Disney’s video game adaptation, Prince of Persia. So…just as X-Men and Spiderman started an avalanche of comic book movie adaptations, be prepared for every big game to eventually hit the screen.

The nice thing is, studios are realizing the horrible truth, in that most video game movies have good intentions, but ultimately bite the big one. (Even my beloved Silent Hill made me raise an eyebrow on more than one occasion.) For this reason, I’ve noticed that studios are placing far more emphasis on the screenplay than ever before. For Mass Effect's Hollywood debut, Legendary is in talks with screenwriter, Mark Protosevich, who is known for his work on I Am Legend, The Cell, and is currently penning Marvel’s Thor.

Producer Avi Arad is a VERY busy man, having consistently produced just about every comic book-related film for the last decade. According to his imdb profile, the following video game projects should interest you:

EverQuest
Mass Effect
inFamous
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Lost Planet

Not to mention what’s cookin’ elsewhere in Hollywood…

World of Warcraft is in pre-production
Silent Hill 2 (Working Title) just started filming in Toronto
Resident Evil: Afterlife hits theatres this September
Halo and Gears of War are forever in “talks”

There have already been statements about a sequel to Disney’s Prince of Persia and the list goes on and on!

There is one thing that always sets video games apart from their film counterparts, and that’s the lack of interactivity. Resident Evil: Afterlife will be featured in 3D, but that’s going to be the closest we’re going to get to gamer immersion. (Unless you USUALLY get kicked in the face by Milla Jovovich when you’re playing a game.) The fact of the matter is, the more cinematic and beautifully told video games continue to be, the more studios are going to want to interpret that into dollar signs.

Let’s hope they continue to be picky and let the story be king.

Meanwhile, Hollywood is reversing this idea in the spirit of 80’s reboots, in that they’re turning some classic cinema into video games. GirlGamer will be hitting the Paramount booth at E3 and speaking with some very special guests from movies-turned-video games…namely Top Gun and Days of Thunder!

See You At the Movies!

Meh, hate me or not, but I'm tired of hollywood ripping off games for movie ideas. All they've been doing for the last ten years is remaking the same movie. The "new" Hulk, Batman "new" Batman, even the "new" Karate Kid. Now it's more and more, game idea after game idea being used. I'm seeing less and less "movies" and more and more extensions of the game intros and game endings...

Sorry :X

Now, with the exception of WoW, because Blizzard has a great animation department, I would be interested in seeing a full-length movie THEY make themselves, wow based or not.
