Homefront Review - THQ's Brutal American Invasion

John Millius is no stranger to great story-telling. He’s the screenwriter behind Red Dawn, Apocolypse Now and even Conan the Barbarian. These days, story is king of the video game – if we aren’t personally invested in our characters, we have no desire to fight for them.

Homefront is a high-risk and high-budget video game that pushes the limits of what you think about our nation’s security and possibly what it will take to turn your stomach. In the first two minutes alone, my character witnessed a handful of brutal murders and beatings, to include women and children. 'This must have been what it was like,’ I thought, wincing, 'to have been a Jew in Nazi Germany.’

New Korean Federation of Occupied America – Bringing America Back to Greatness

This game is BRUTAL, yet thought-provoking; here’s the official launch trailer for a taste:

So, a lot of hype, planning and hard work went into the making of Homefront, not to mention HUGE cajones to make a game about the fall of America. How does it rate, you ask? Click on the screenshot to read the full review (don’t worry, no spoilers):

I don't care much how short it was. I loved the game. The shooting style and handleing of the guns is way better than that of Call Of Duty

I agree about the length vs. price - also about censorship. I would have thought it'd be banned PERIOD from Korea and possibly Japan (they surrender to Korea in the game) - to censor it just takes all the wind out of the story's sails.

Imo having all the Korean references removed probably would have stripped the game of any real feel of engagement. They refer to North Korea as "A certain country to the North" and KJI as the "Northern Leader" which they claim was done because using KJI's name would have been malicious. I mean the soldiers talk in Korean so it's quite obvious it's Korea unless they took Korean and swapped it out with I dunno, swahili? lol. I think censoring it simply destroys the essence of the story.

What makes Homefront what it is is an allied Korea could be capable of such a thing if you just base it on their massive army which if I am not mistaken is the largest in the world and how China currently pretty much owns the US and can anytime send the economy into a downward spiral causing the economic situation portrayed in Homefront. It's a far fetched scenario with the odds of occurring slim but also not so far fetched because it's possible when you break down all the events. That I think is what makes the story quite powerful and quite ballsy. Take out Korea and might has well just insert aliens here and call it "Battle:San Fran" or something.

So in your experience playing the game - how do you speculate the alterations might have impacted the cohesiveness of the game itself? Would it have still made sense with those cuts? *picks brain* But Yea, as a person who usually sticks to the single player modes of a FPS, that price seems a bit steep for the short of an experience. I'd still like to play it, but maybe as a rental.
I did notice some hardcore marketing for this title, they obviously put a lot of stake into its success.

Great job HB. I wonder how everyone else feels about this story. I of course am curious about the effectiveness of any story that has to be changed dependent upon who you are telling it to.

Homefront was censored in Asia or at least Japan and removed all references to Korea and Kim Jong Il and it was banned in South Korea.

Kaos GM David Votypka defended the 5 hours saying that everyone else does it and that vet fpsers can do it in 5 hours but then in an interview in CVG he acknowledges in veiled terms they should have made singleplayer longer, like closer to 10 hours. 99% of the criticism is the length of the SP campaign.

I think i read somewhere about the story being altered for overseas markets. Alex or Angel - either of you hear anything about this? I would have assumed that, given the nature of the story here, overseas audiences (specifically asian markets) might not have been targeted to at all. Thoughts?

Lex - 5hrs? that's it? *thats a shame* For $49.99 (as it is on Amazon) thats $10 per hour to play this game. Outrageous.

Good story but eventually loses it's brutality. I have to give an "epic fail" to Kaos for their cop out for making the game less than 5 hours. I mean really, since when is "we made ours 5 hours because everyone else does it" an acceptable excuse?

Newbs might take longer but I finished in just under 5 without hurrying through. Socom is 8 or so hours, some say 6ish, COD:BO I think I finished in around 8-9 maybe. What happened to being better than the rest? I can see just making it 5 hours but telling your customers oh we did it because everyone else does tends to indicate wanting to be like the rest instead of better.

Just like the guys doing Brink said "Oh we didn't include any female playable characters because of technology limitations.". Homefront is still great, brutal, and has some crazy scenes, just in the end I was disappointed it was over so quickly.
