Girl Gamer

I saw a post on Facebook making fun of people over the age of 20 still playing video games. (they said something like "grow up and get a job.") I thought this was hilarious because I'm a 32 year old mother, I work at a bookstore and am very much a gamer. Being a girl gamer is becoming not so rare but what about women over thirty? Any women like myself out there?

I'm 31 and I like video games. :D

The advantage of being in our age bracket is we grew up with the *good* stuff so there was very little chance of us NOT continuing on. ;)

But then I was picking up a cup of tea last week and heard a couple of young girls describe a "spinster" as any woman who is unmarried/never been married and over the age of 25.

So bizarre. Gaming has grown up with its gamers, so it makes plenty of sense that a lot of players will be 30+. If you were a 20 year-old playing arcade games back in the '70s and continued playing to this date, you'd be nearly 60, which I don't find that unreasonable.

Besides, if you're supposed to stop gaming when you're 20, what's the point of Mature titles? They're only expected to be played by 18 and 19 year-olds? And who's paying for games except for people "with jobs"?

40!!!! And I still love a good shooter. It's funny how people assume that if you are a gamer that you don't work, don't go outside, and don't have friends. I love to game - started during my Olympics try out a few years back and my gamertag on XBL is chocokitty.

Considering that most of the game devs and system designers for the first gen games are now in their late 60's and most of us who started off at eight or nine on the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600 are now in our 40s, there is no such thing as to old to play video games or enjoy video games.

To old to play games will be when I begin getting arthritis so bad that I can't hold a controller anymore --- as for the getting jobs things, yes silly 12's this is why adult gamers have more consoles more games, and better computers than you do- We work and have jobs in order to get money to buy games.

if your 25 or 35, age shouldn't matter. in old fashion words, gaming is fun for all ages.

On this site there are between age 25-36 plenty of female gamers on here. As you can see thre are more around 25-27 but they will only get older and if they continue to play you will see an increased female gaming population higher up in the age group.

Well, I'm 26, I have a real job, I'm also married, I play since I was 4 and I intend to play for many more years. People who think that games are for kids are just stupid and ignorant. Like Puff said, many games are rated M, so it means (at least in my country) that you need to have at least 18 years old to play them.
And why shouldn't we be able to have fun the way we prefer? Some people like to watch TV, some others like to go to the gym, others like to do crochet. We like to play games. It doesn't matter how old you are, you're allowed to spend your time the way you want. Simple as that.

Yeah I don't get why people make comments like that. It is just pure ignorance and making the judgement that you're just some lazy basement dwelling gamer.

I'm 26 and have been gaming for about 20+ years now. I've played all different types of games and I know for a fact I will always enjoy them.

If you cant be a women/men and "old" when playing games I think they should say that to men who play football for a living, or is it because they make money out of it that makes it legit? If that is the case I can count a lot of people who make money through e-sport on gaming. :)

It's ignorance that makes people make comments like that. They don't understand what a huge world gaming is. They don't understand the enjoyment of it and they certainly don't understand the social aspect of it. All I hear in work all day is people talking about the previous nights 'reality' shows. And they tell ME to get a life when I say I wasn't watching. 'Sorry, I was busy online actually socialising'!!
