Hey, GG crew, my husband and I (my hubby especially) are big zombie apocalypse fans. I was thinking of picking up Left 4 Dead for him as a gift, but wasn't sure if it was worth renting first, or a definite buy.

Did I read right, that you can play as zombies? I know there is another post on this debating as to whether it's lame or not, but I figured I'd start fresh from a different perspective.

Constructively, what are some pros and cons to this game?

Thanks in advance...

I'm still relatively new to the game, but Left 4 Dead is overall a good game. It doesn't, however, focus TOO much on game play as the zombies. You can choose to play as the zombies in a game mode called "versus". It takes up to eight players, divided into teams of four. One team plays as the "survivors" the other as the zombies. People really enjoying playing this mode, but you alternate between zombies and survivors. Still, it's generally fun to play any mode of this game. I suggest taking a chance and getting it. You can watch TONS of youtube videos for some game play footage as well.

There are four scenarios in the overall campaign but don't let that dissuade you from picking this title up. There is TONS of replay value and fun. The zombie mode is EXTRA fun, really fun actually. And it takes more strategy to take down the group of survivors. Definitely worth getting as it is the best zombie survivor game out on the market. You will not regret.

If you and the hubby are fans of zombies, L4D is definitely worth picking up. It's one of my faves. I can't get enough of the co-op!

Angel, it's a definite buy. This is the ultimate coop game and with a guaranteed person to play with like your husband, you're definitely going to have a lot of fun.

It's good for hour long sessions (if not longer) or even a short session.

Cons:
- you deal with the same problems online as with any other game. Unfortunately, people who want to be superstars are especially a problem in this codependent game.
- sometimes it can be frustrating with the Special Infected because it can feel like the AI is "cheating", but I think this is just a matter of perception
- if you get this on Xbox and the rest of your team aren't using mics, it can get extremely frustrating because communication can be key to surviving (mostly in Versus or Advanced/Expert of the campaign mode). PC version, people can type, which is better than nothing.
- sometimes by choosing "quick match", you end up doing the same campaign a little too often. I was really starting to get sick of No Mercy.
- Unfortunately some maps have glitches that people take advantage of in Versus as well as in Survival mode, so sometimes a person's Survival mode time-score isn't at all representative of their skill.

Pros:
- You get to kill zombies. Lots and lots of zombies.
- You get to play as a zombie.
- Ultimate coop/party game.
- Creates a great sense of competition thanks to Versus mode
- Survival Mode really separates those who can cooperate from those who can't. (with the exception of glitches, but those people's times tend to be ridiculously high)
- What little story is there is very fascinating
- The characters are very rich as is the music. In fact, each person playing has their own soundtrack specifically designed to what they are feeling and experiencing at the time. Very cool, in my opinion.

I wrote a first impressions review as well as an article on the Survival mode:

I had actually bought it off Steam because it was on sale without knowing whether or not I'd like it. I have yet to regret it :D

Wow, thanks for the input, everyone, and that's a great idea to check out YouTube for game play examples. I do that all the time, why didn't I think of that? ...don't answer that.
