Just a brief rant.
Now, I’ll admit, I’m a very story-driven gamer, but at the same time I feel there’s a lot of importance in gameplay. After all, the interactivity is why you are playing the game. I just prefer that you intertwine the story and interactivity in awesome ways that aren’t achievable in other mediums. I know not all games can or will do this, but at that point I at least demand you get the basics right.
If you have a story, then you should be as entertaining as Iron Man or Avatar or something.
But at the same time, a lot of people say the story doesn’t matter because it’s a game. Ok, well, in that case, don’t have a story. That or minimize it. Left 4 Dead does fine with a setting and characters but no actual plot. Quake 2 was awesome like that as well.
Yet at the same time, these very people will bitch about “casual games” like iPhone games and Nintendo games.
This is bullshit.
I used to be the sort of gamer that was all “Nintendo has abandoned its fans!”, but when you get right down to it, they’re making the same games they always have. The only thing that’s changed is what gamers want, and that seems to be exclusive to competitive multiplayer at times.
I recently got New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and let me tell you, it makes me feel like a kid again.
Only now I’ve got a ton of experience studying and even implementing good design, and it’s amazing how many base ideas of Mario that make it so fun are also so fundamental in trying to build a good game, all applicable even today.
So whenever I hear gamers bitching about Facebook, iPhone, iPad or Wii games, honestly…augh. Makes me wanna throw a baby in the microwave.
Rant over.
None yet.
